The Courtyard

The Courtyard is a special place for me in design. As with any design work I do, the space ‘naturally’ dictates what it needs.  The color comes to me from the sense of it’s surroundings.  The moment I walked into this courtyard I wanted to warm it up. I envisioned terra cotta and worn wood.  I asked the owner what he wished to feel from this space...he replied, Mediterranean colors  and comfort.  So we were on the same page.  The home is near the ocean and not very old in nature, so I could ware it down a bit, but not to an extensive old Italian look as the design integrity of the home would be compromised.

This is a common design error...too many different styles going on and not flowing with the original sense of the home.  When this happens it doesn’t define your home or your personality.

Design Challenge:

  1. stark yellow walls

  2. plain cement hole

  3. skimpy potting bench

  4. old seated bench

  5. showcase florals

  6. needs personality
